EDUCATION SESSIONS

Free The Hounds is proud to be able offer incursions to schools in Perth and surrounds. We have a talented volunteer team who are dedicated in spreading awareness about the negative impacts of greyhound racing and enjoy speaking with young people about the lovely nature of greyhounds.

Our incursions are focused around teaching young people about advocacy, influencing their thinking about greyhounds as “race dogs” and introducing them to lovely, rescued greyhounds. In collaboration with WA Teachers, our team developed age-appropriate resources that align with the WA school curriculum.

We have three formal presentations available, tailored to years 5 through 12, covering the basics of greyhound racing, advocacy, animal welfare and gambling. Visits that have occurred during the online petition also included an overview of what a petition is and how everyday people can influence the decision-makers in parliament. Along with our visits, we provide teachers with classroom lesson plans and add-on activities to further their student’s thinking.

When we are able to arrange a collaboration with a local children’s author, they also love to chat to students about the path to authorship and how to use the power of books to influence attitudes.

Our presentations are very carefully delivered to both educate students about the greyhound racing industry and empower them to make up their own minds about how they believe animals should be treated. We present our view (that we believe greyhound racing is outdated, inhumane and unsustainable) and encourage students to conduct their research before making up their minds. We trust the intelligence and compassion of the next generation and believe they will be integral in ending greyhound racing.

Many students have since conducted school projects on greyhounds, initiated their fundraising campaigns or made donations of snuggle mats and toys to local rescue shelters.
